Western Province Senior & Junior Local Competitions:
Western Province’s competitive lifesaving season usually comprises of three local WP competitions, and a Provincial Championships. The events in lifesaving are spread evenly over the three local competitions, with the Provincial Championships comprising of all the events which make up competitive lifesaving.
The age groups are as follows: U/15, U/17, U/19 and Open (≥20 y.o.) in both male and female categories.
The top 8 positions score points at all local competitions, in each event. At the end of the season, the people with the most points in each event are awarded prizes, thus comprising the “Grand-Prix” style of racing. The competitions are held on Saturdays afternoons, roughly once a month on various beaches around Cape Town. Western Province Champs is held over a full weekend.
These competitions are open to all qualified lifeguards.
Surf Rescue Classic – Llandudno:
This is a specialised senior event, held on Llandudno beach. A select team of participants are chosen to compete for False Bay, against other select teams from other lifesaving clubs in Cape Town. The event is held on a Saturday afternoon. There are only 4 events: Reel Alarm, Board Rescue, Craft Rescue and Rescue-tube Rescue. These 4 events are then repeated 3 times. Points are scores for various positions and then tallied-up at the end of the day to determine the winner.
8 Man Classic:
This event, as the name suggests, comprises of a team of 8 members. The team is selected beforehand. This competition usually takes place on a Saturday (scheduled for 17th January 2009.) It is a senior/open age-group competition. At the event, there are various events (13 in total) of which ANY team member may be picked (drawn from a hat) to do ANY event on the programme. Thus some members will do many events, while other members may have very few events to do – It’s just luck of the draw.
